Las Mariposas: How Three Sisters Defied a Dictator

TEDEd has a lesson on the Mirabal sisters, four young middle-class Dominican women of which three were active in different ways within the underground fight against dictator Raphael Trujillo’s regime, which ran from 1930 until his assassination in 1961. The three politically active sisters were murdered by Trujillo’s secret police the year before his death, and the remaining sister started the Casa Museo Hermanas Mirabal to tell their stories. She passed in 2014 at age 88. The lesson includes a short video on the sisters and the context of their work, a short quiz, further resources, and a guided discussion question. Find that lesson here.
