You’ve been accepted to your study abroad program. This page includes the information and resources you need to complete your pre-departure requirements and get ready to go abroad.
Your Next Steps
Start with Your Pre-Departure Checklist
Your Pre-Departure Checklist (DOCX) outlines everything you’re responsible for before you leave. Work through it one step at a time. Critical steps that should be completed as early as possible include:
- Finalizing academics
- Securing travel documents (passport, visa if required)
- Preparing for health and safety
Individual programs may have additional requirements provided by the host institution or provider.
Prepare for Daily Life Abroad
Once your essentials are underway, start thinking about what your day-to-day will look like.
The Study Abroad Packing List (DOCX) can help you decide what to bring without overpacking. Use it as a guide, not a rulebook. Also, keep in mind your host country/program-specific needs, such as weather considerations, course excursions, etc.
You should also begin preparing:
- Finances (how you’ll access money abroad)
- Technology (phone, communication, access to UWM accounts with MFA)
- Housing expectations and logistics
Attend Pre-Departure Orientation(s) (Required)
All students are required to attend the general Pre-Departure Orientation, held virtually. You may also have program- or country-specific orientations/meetings, held either in-person or virtually.
You’ll learn what to expect, ask questions, and meet the people who will be part of your experience. You’ll learn more about:
- Personal behavior and conduct expectations
- Academics
- Health and safety
- Finances
- Travel logistics and housing
- Navigating cultural differences
- International travel basics
- Available resources and support
Take Time to Reflect Before You Go
It’s normal to feel nervous or unsure before going abroad. You might be excited one minute and questioning everything the next.
Give yourself a moment to pause and consider:
- What am I most excited about?
- What am I most nervous about?
- What do I want to get out of this experience?
Write down three goals for your time abroad. They don’t have to be perfect. Just honest.
If You’re Feeling Overwhelmed or Have Questions
