Studying abroad is an investment, and it might be more affordable than you think. This page breaks down UWM study abroad costs and how to use financial aid, scholarships and grants.

What’s Included in UWM Study Abroad Program Cost

Each study abroad program has a unique cost structure, depending on the destination, program length and program type. Understanding what’s included (and what’s not) is an important part of planning.

Billable items (charged to your UWM PAWS account):

  • UWM tuition or program fee
  • Center for International Education (CIE) administrative fee
  • International health insurance

Non-billable items (you pay directly):

  • UWM application fee
  • Passport
  • Visa (if needed)
  • Airfare
  • Housing (if not included)
  • Food
  • Transportation
  • Books and supplies
  • Miscellaneous personal expenses

Note: A detailed cost breakdown for each program is available. From the Program Search page, find your program of choice and check the “Program Cost” tab.

Using Financial Aid

Most students fund their study abroad experience with a mix of financial aid, scholarships and personal funds.

Pro Tip:
Don’t wait until you’re accepted to a program to start thinking about funding. Start planning early, as some scholarship deadlines are up to a year in advance.

Financial Aid Overview

  • Most federal, state and campus-based financial aid can be used for study abroad, just like if you were staying on campus.
  • Aid can be in the form of loans, grants and scholarships, including FAFSA.
  • Aid disbursement happens no sooner than 10 days before the term begins, so plan ahead to cover upfront program costs.
  • The UWM Student Financial Services office will adjust your financial aid award based on your programs’ total cost of attendance.

  • Explore short-term programs (Summer/UWinteriM) for more budget flexibility.
  • Try fundraising platforms. Ask friends, family and local groups for donations.
  • Ask your parents and family for support. Show them the benefits of study abroad with a short presentation and offer to match their contribution.
