Fitting Archaeology into a Multidisciplinary Grand Challenge Program: “Planet Texas 2050”

March 2, 2018 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Free

Join the Art History Department as we co-sponsor this lecture by Adam Rabinowitz, Associate Professor of Classics & Assistant Director of the Institute of Classical Archaeology University of Texas-Austin.

Planet Texas 2050 (https://bridgingbarriers.utexas.edu/) is the first “theme” to be launched under the “Bridging Barriers” grand challenge initiative at the University of Texas at Austin. Each theme addresses a challenge that UT Austin is uniquely positioned to confront, with impact both within the state of Texas and beyond. In this colloquium, we will explore the role of interdisciplinary research into past societies within a larger research project that is otherwise primarily focused on building resiliency to rapid urbanization and extreme weather in Texas in the present and the future. We will pay particular attention to the opportunities and challenges involved with the integration of digital data from a variety of heterogeneous — and sometimes incommensurate — sources.
