Film Screening: Double Play
December 3, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
FreeDouble Play examines the twenty-year friendship of two iconic American independent filmmakers, Richard Linklater, of recent Boyhood fame, and James Benning, renowned durational experimental filmmaker (and native Milwaukeean). Tracing the affinities between these two distinct voices in American independent and experimental cinema, the documentary reveals – in a series of intimate conversations between Benning and Linklater in Austins, Texas over the course of a week – their mutual concerns with time, the everyday, and film as a medium of memory. The film uses rare archival footage to draw connections across their works. Winner of Best Documentary on Cinema at the Venice Film Festival.
Cosponsored by the UWM Department of Art History, Film Studies Program, Department of Art & Design, and Center for 21st Century Studies
