Good Afternoon, Colleagues.

Here are this week’s updates from Academic Affairs:

Proposed New Budget Model

This Thursday, AVC for Business & Financial Services Jerry Tarrer will present an overview of the proposed new Budget Model for UWM in the Library 4th Floor conference room at 3:00 p.m.

Kudos

– Michael  Mikoś, Foreign Languages and Literature, has a new book out: City of Memory, from Slavica Publishers. Congrats, Michael.

– Javier Tapia has been appointed to the Advisory Council of the Institute of Mexicans Abroad, where he will continue his work in strengthening relationships with Mexico. Congratulations, Javier!

– BSAS student Hebah Abdel Karim Abu Baker’s design for the intersection of W. 35th Street and Vliet Street was showcased in the Avenues West Association newsletter. Hebah completed this design as part of the “Washington Park Collaborative” studio led by Associate Professor Arijit Sen. See her design. Congratulations, Hebah!

– UWM graduate Lauren Decker was one of only two successful candidates at the Chicago Lyric Opera Young Artists auditions this past weekend. The Chicago Young Artists program is among the top programs in the country.  Congratulations, Lauren!

Enrollment update

A summary of our final enrollment numbers (which are down from last year) will be sent to campus later this week.

As I mentioned in an earlier update, a number of new faculty have joined UWM. This week we highlight Nursing and welcome them to campus:

Travel Policy Changes

Effective October 1, there will be major changes to UW System travel policies. Of primary interest to UWM travelers are the increased mileage, lodging, and per diem allowances. Review the new policiesCalculate per diems.

The Week

Monday
I start the week with a Chancellor’s Inauguration Steering Committee meeting, followed by meetings with VCs LaLiberte, Luljak, and Van Harpen. I’m attending a meeting of the Academic Staff Committee, and the Chancellor’s Cabinet meets. I am also attending a lunch meeting (organized by the UWM Libraries) with visitors from a number of African universities (they are here on a Carnegie grant). In the afternoon, CEMAT (Chancellor’s Enrollment Management Team) meets to discuss: Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) Plan, Accountability Dashboard, new financial aid process, and criteria for admission to UWM.

Tuesday
I have a quarterly development meeting to discuss fundraising with the Chancellor and VC Borger. I have a regular meeting with L&S Dean Swain, followed by a Provost’s staff meeting. I will attend a meeting at the Zilber School of Public Health to finalize the appointment of their Interim Dean.

Wednesday
The deans have a morning meeting, and then I have several meetings with my direct reports. In the afternoon, there is a meeting of the Chancellor’s Campus Organization and Effectiveness Team (CCOET).

Thursday
I’m attending the Academic Planning and Budgeting Committee meeting in the morning, followed by meetings with direct reports and College of Nursing Dean Lundeen.

Friday
There is a UW System Provosts meeting that I will attend via video. Agenda items include an update, discussion, and possible resolution on fetal tissue use. There is also the Community Paramedic Graduation ceremony that I will attend.

Announcements

African Scholars Visit Milwaukee
– UWM is hosting a group of 16 library and information professionals from Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda from September 21-25. They are enrolled in a two-year coursework master’s program organized by the Department of Information Science at the University of Pretoria in partnership with UW-Milwaukee, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.

Women’s & Gender Studies Fall 2015 Brown Bag Series
– Associate Professor Noelle Chesley, Sociology, presents, “Can Gender-Atypical Work/Family Arrangements “Unstall” the Revolution?” on Thursday, October 1 at noon in NWQ-B 7578. For more information contact WGS at (414) 229-5918.

Online Program Council
– The Online Program Council will meet this Friday from 10:30-noon in Lubar S250. Agenda items include planning/marketing for the 2016 online summer session and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning’s Virtual Teaching Commons.

UWM Speakers Bureau
– UWM External Relations is excited to announce a new initiative, the UWM Speakers Bureau. The Speakers Bureau pairs UWM faculty, staff, and alumni with community organizations to share their expertise and spread the good work of UWM.

UWM Alumni Association’s Panther Prowl 5K Run/Walk

Work Group on Undergraduate Advising
– The Work Group on Undergraduate Advising is hosting another round of open forums to share the group’s progress and collect feedback from campus. Please join one of the following open forum sessions:

  • Tuesday, September 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, September 23 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Each open forum will be held in Union 280. Space is limited for each session so please reserve your seatLearn more about the Work Group.

TedXUW-Milwaukee
– On October 3 from 1-7 p.m. in the Union Wisconsin Room TEDxUWMilwaukee 2015 presents React Differently. Fifteen speakers will present a single idea that prompts the audience and the cameras to react differently. Learn more and purchase tickets.

Research Mentor Training

– UWM’s Academic Adventurers features Janet Padway, Assistant Director of Libraries, with a talk, “Libraries in the Land of a Thousand Hills: Rwanda,” on Friday, September 25 at 3 p.m. in the American Geographical Society Library. More information.

– “Data Management 101,” a workshop covering the basics of managing research data (including file naming and organization conventions, data documentation, and best practices in data storage and backups) will be held in the Digital Humanities Lab on Friday, September 25 from noon to 1 p.m. More information.

– Marija Gajdardziska-Josifovska, UWM Graduate School Dean, cordially invites you to attend the celebration honoring our 2015-16 fellowship recipients on Wednesday, September 30 from 4 – 6 p.m. in the Golda Meir Library, 4th Floor Conference Center. Program begins at 4:30 p.m.

Other
– Japan (not really known for its rugby) caused one of the biggest upsets in world rugby when they beat the Springboks (South Africa) in a World Cup rugby match over the weekend.
