Good morning, colleagues. Here are this week’s updates from Academic Affairs.

Kudos

– The Peck School of the Arts received a $1M donation from alumna and artist Jan Serr and her husband, John Shannon, to create and operate a multidisciplinary arts studio and performance space. Congratulations, PSOA!

 Junhong Chen, Mechanical Engineering, has received another award from NSF in the amount of $330,000 over three years for his project titled, “Real-Time and Low-Cost Monitoring of Orthophosphate Ions Using Novel Graphene-Based Transistor Sensors.” It is an NSF GOALI award that includes collaboration between UWM and Industry. Well done, Junhong!

– The School of Information Studies received a $50K grant from The Greater Milwaukee Foundation to support NonprofitIT in hiring a grad student to allow for expansion. The grant period will run from January 2017 through December 2018. Well done, SOIS!

– Ivan Ascher, Political Science, had his book, “Portfolio Society: On the Capitalist Mode of Prediction,” published this month by MIT Press. Portions of the book were written during his fellowship year (2014-15) at the Center for 21st Century Studies. Congratulations, Ivan!

– Mark Schwartz, Geography and President of the International Society of Biometeorology, was quoted last week on BBC Mundo, the BBC’s service for the Spanish-speaking world, which attracts nearly 8.5 million unique visitors each month. Congratulations, Mark!

– Tanya Joosten, Academic Affairs, whose Distance Education and Technological Advancements (DETA) Update was published in the WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies (WCET) blog. Way to go, Tanya!

The Week

Monday
I normally start my Monday mornings with a meeting with Robin Van Harpen, followed by the Academic Staff Committee, and the Chancellor’s Cabinet meeting. In the afternoon, I have meetings with direct reports and CEMAT meets. Agenda items include: review of 2016 enrollment; SEM update; ITT closure-campus enrollment initiatives; UW Colleges; MSEP update; 2017 scholarships; and high school outreach.

Tuesday
I start the day with the Deans’ Morning Meeting, followed by my weekly staff meeting. I’ll attend the University Committee meeting in the afternoon and also the Multicultural Network meeting.

Wednesday
I’ll attend the UWM Foundation Board of Directors meeting early on Wednesday morning. I also have meetings with direct reports and my weekly meeting with the Chancellor. In the afternoon, I have a meeting regarding a partnership between UWM and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin and there is a campus budget planning meeting.

Thursday
The day starts with the APBC meeting, followed by the Chancellor’s Student Success Work Group meeting. In the afternoon, I meet with VC Pat Borger for our Quarterly Development Update meeting. I also have an AAUP meeting with Rachel Buff, Chancellor Mone, and VC Robin Van Harpen, a meeting with Biostats faculty at the Zilber School of Public Health, and a meeting with Ron Perez.

Friday
I have a day filled with administrative tasks and a farewell luncheon for the University of Pretoria MIT Carnegie Visitors.

Revamped MyUW site to debut September 27
Beginning on September 27, when you log in to MyUW at https://my.uwm.edu or https://my.wisconsin.edu, you’ll experience a new and improved MyUW site. See additional details about the MyUW changes.

PantherFILE
UWM will be retiring pantherFILE at the end of this calendar year. Individual files will move to OneDrive for Business, group storage will move to SharePoint Online, and web pages will move to CampusPress WordPress. See more information about the pantherFILE retirement efforts.

HIA-MSOE Big Data Workshop
UWM’s College of Health Sciences Health Informatics and Administration and Milwaukee School of Engineering will host a big data workshop at MSOE on September 26-27. There will be a poster session with two $400 awards for best student poster. You may attend in person or online (though you must be present for your poster session.) Participation in the workshop is free of charge. For more information, contact tccbhi@gmail.com. Bicycle & Motorcycle Dynamics Symposium
The International Symposium on Bicycle and Motorcycle Dynamics will meet in the United States for the very first time on September 21-23 at UWM’s School of Continuing Education Conference Center. CEAS, MSOE, and a Harley Davidson employee (and UWM alum) were instrumental in bringing the conference to the U.S.

Homecoming
Consider offering a workshop or hosting an open house for students, family members, alumni, faculty, staff, and the community during Homecoming, Family Weekend, and the Panther Prowl 2016 on Saturday, October 8 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. We expect over 1500 Panther Prowl Participants and over 2000 Panther Families on campus that day. We are looking for departments or units who are interested in offering activities in their spaces and we hope you will sign-up today. If you are interested please contact Keri Duce at klduce@uwm.edu.

Title IX Training
The Office of Equity/Diversity Services will be conducting a training session for all campus employees, staff, and students from 1:30 – 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 6 in Union Room 191.  Please pre-register.

Just a reminder: The Libraries will host a recognition ceremony for recent UWM Authors in spring 2017 and are requesting that any UWM faculty or staff member who has written, edited, translated, or illustrated a book, has composed music for a published score or recording, or has had a primary role in creating a commercially distributed film or video since the last UWM Authors Recognition event in 2015, please fill out the UWM Authors online form.
