June 26, 2017  |  News & Events, Provost's Updates

Good morning, colleagues. Here is this week’s brief update from Academic Affairs.

Kudos

Bettina Arnold, Anthropology, was interviewed for a documentary film on the Iron Age Celts of west-central Europe in 2016. The premiere showing at the Louvre in Paris on June 15, 2017 will be followed by a seven-day broadcast on the French/German television channel ARTE. Well done, Bettina!

Liam Callanan, English, is the 2017 winner of the George W. Hunt, S.J., Prize for Excellence in Journalism, Arts & Letters. Congratulation, Liam!

Ashley Falzetti, former UWM grad student, was named a 2017 Nancy Weiss Malkeil Scholar by the Woodrow Wilson Foundation. Well done, Ashley!

Donn Haglund, Professor Emeritus, Geography, will receive this year’s Lowell Thomas Award, the Explorers Club’s highest honor. Donn is in good company with the likes of Carl Sagan, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, Jr., Jean-Michel Cousteau, Sir Edmund P. Hillary, and Sir David Attenborough. Congratulations, Donn!

A noteworthy item from WUWM, our outstanding NPR affiliate:

Last week at City Hall, Mayor Tom Barrett joined more than 100 other community members to help kick off the WUWM Eric Von Fellowship. Von was a long-time journalist and powerful voice in the African-American community. At that event, and through other fund raising activities, WUWM has raised sufficient funds to launch the Eric Von Broadcast Journalism Fellowship. We will give a newly minted journalism graduate a one-year full time position to practice their craft and follow in the footsteps of Von.
