Interpreting Track

The Interpreting Track is designed for those interested in language-services careers focused on interpreting.

Requirements

Total Credits Required

30 credits

Required Core Seminars (6 credits)
  • Trnsltn 709 - Literary & Cultural Translation, 3 credits
  • Trnsltn 820 - Translation Theory, 3 credits
Required Interpreting Courses (12 credits)
  • Trnsltn 700 - Consecutive Interpreting, 3 credits
  • Trnsltn 711 - Ethics & Procedures in Interpreting, 3 credits
  • Trnsltn 722 - Simultaneous Interpreting, 3 credits
  • Trnsltn 750 - Other Modes of Interpreting, 3 credits
Required Non-Interpreting Courses (6 credits)
  • Trnsltn 710 - Comparative Systems in Translation, 3 credits
  • Trnsltn 730 - Internship in Translation/Interpreting, 3 credits
Electives (6 credits)

List is not exhaustive

  • Trnsltn 530 – Business & Professional Aspects of Translation, 3 credits
  • Trnsltn 7xx – Translation workshop in relevant language pair, 3 credits
  • Trnsltn 727 – Project Management in Translation , 3 credits
  • Trnsltn 728 – Editing for the Translation Industry , 3 credits
  • Approved course in your area of specialization (can be offered by a unit other than Translation & Interpreting Studies)


Second Concentration (15 credits if applicable)

Students completing a double concentration with Translation and another area of study must enroll in the 8 required courses listed above and 5 courses in their second concentration.

Comprehensive Examination

Students must also pass comprehensive examinations at the end of their studies.

GPA Requirements

Students must earn a B or better to pass graduate-level courses. Graduate School requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 for graduation.

Time Limit

The student must complete all degree requirements within five years of initial enrollment.
