Fire Circle Reservation Requests

We welcome members of the community on the UWM campus and beyond to engage in and learn traditional ways of learning and knowing at the UWM Indigenous Fire Circle.

These stones who stand here remind us of indigenous ancestors who centered their cultures on the sustainable stewardship of land, water and all life. The circle continues from the first sunrise on earth to the next moonrise. Most recently, Menominee, Ho-Chunk and Potawatomi villages guarded the confluence of the Menominee, Kinnickinnic and Milwaukee rivers here along the shoreline of Michigaming, the great freshwater sea. They are still present, along with members of many other nations, retaining our connection to Minowakii, this Good Land.

This installation was designed by Chris Cornelius, citizen of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. Funded through the generosity of Bader Philanthropies Inc. Installed October 2021.
