You’ll appreciate the exceptional opportunities to achieve your academic goals, as evidenced by the range of students from diverse science and engineering backgrounds that choose to pursue their PhD in Engineering with a concentration in materials science with us.

Flexible Programs

We offer flexible programs with evening classes to meet students’ research interests and work schedules and have an option for a direct entry into the PhD program without an MS degree for qualified applicants.

Top Notch Resources

You can work side-by-side with accomplished faculty who have research and expertise in materials for energy, or water, composites, or electronic applications. You’ll find a wide array of facilities and labs on the main UWM campus and at the UWM School of Freshwater Sciences for water research.

Funding Support

Many of our PhD students are funded through teaching and research assistantships and have strong publishing records.

Research Poster Competition & Experiential Learning Expo

The annual Research Poster Competition & Experiential Learning Expo is a signature event for our college. Students gain valuable communication experience sharing their research and out-of-classroom experiences with faculty and industry judges, who provide feedback.

Student Organizations

Our college has an active chapter of American Foundry Society (AFS) that provides academic, hands-on, and career opportunities to students interested in metallurgy and the metal casting industry. See our college’s Student Org page to find more information about getting involved.
