Civil Engineering

The Civil Engineering Program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the commission’s General Criteria and the Program Criteria for Civil and Similarly Named Engineering Programs.

Program Educational Objectives:

The Civil Engineering program educational objectives prepare students to:

Program Educational Objectives — Civil Engineering BSE

Objective 1 — Technical Preparation. Graduates apply broad-based knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering principles as a foundation for solving problems and contributing to the design and construction of civil engineering works across the profession.

This objective recognizes that the BSE degree provides the foundational analytical and technical preparation that enables graduates to begin contributing to engineering solutions. The program establishes a solid base in mathematics, sciences, statistics, engineering principles, construction, and modern engineering technologies — including design software, surveying equipment, laboratory tools, and emerging applications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning — as the starting point for lifelong learning and professional development. Graduates are prepared to help address societal challenges related to infrastructure, mobility, sustainability, and a changing climate.

Objective 2 — Design Leadership. Graduates participate in the design and implementation of solutions to complex urban infrastructure challenges by synthesizing knowledge from multiple civil engineering disciplines, and grow into leadership roles as their careers advance.

This objective recognizes that graduates enter the profession with the breadth and depth of technical knowledge needed to sustain a lengthy career as a civil engineer. The program develops competence across the traditional fields of civil engineering — structural, geotechnical, transportation, water and environmental — together with in-depth knowledge in a chosen focus area, proficiency in experimentation, design, and professional tools, and understanding of the legal, environmental, and societal context of engineering practice. The program explicitly connects design preparation to enduring societal needs such as transportation mobility, sustainable infrastructure systems, and climate resilience.

Objective 3 — Perceptive Communication. Graduates contribute effectively within teams and professional organizations by demonstrating effective communication, ethical responsibility, social awareness, and emerging leadership and management skills, growing into leadership roles as they advance in the profession.

This objective addresses the nontechnical foundation of professional practice. The program builds the professional foundation for responsible participation in the engineering profession, preparing graduates with the communication, ethical, leadership, and management capabilities needed to help shape infrastructure solutions that serve communities. Professional preparation includes engineering ethics, effective written and oral communication, engagement with professional organizations, teamwork, and the integration of non-engineering factors — legal, environmental, social, and economic — into engineering designs and decisions.

Objective 4 — Proactive Adaptability. Graduates adapt to evolving urban and global challenges — including urban growth, sustainability, and a changing climate — by exhibiting intellectual curiosity, innovating, pursuing continuous education, and embracing diverse ideas and emerging technologies.

This objective recognizes the rapidly evolving challenges facing civil infrastructure and the need for graduates to grow professionally throughout their careers. The program provides a foundation for continued learning and innovation, exposing students to current research, modern engineering technologies, and the integration of emerging tools — including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, with a deliberate emphasis on engineering applications. Graduates are prepared to remain effective contributors to the solutions that address future societal and environmental challenges.
