Migration Stories, Lynden Sculpture Garden
Lynden Sculpture Garden, just north of Milwaukee, is celebrating World Refugee Day on June 26th with their HOME program. The free event includes vending of food and other items from the HOME community, music from Samba da Vida MKE, and an art exhibition featuring wearable art among other activities. Find more details here. Today we spotlight the event’s multilingual story time with Claudia Orjuela and Julio Pabón. They will be reading a book focusing on migration for children 4-8 years old as an in-person version of their virtual story times occurring every third Wednesday of the month. Señorita Mariposa by Ben Gundersheimer is an inspiring bilingual story about a monarch butterfly’s incredible 3,000-mile migration from Canada, through the United States, to Mexico and back. Children will sing a song about monarchs and engage in monarch conservation by exploring monarch eggs, caterpillars, and milkweed seed pods. Teaching Books has 12 resources for this title, including lesson guides and reflection activities. The Symbolic Migration Project is an annual unit of activities that unites youth across North America through the migration of ambassador butterflies.
