Spotlight: CLACS Awarded Title VI NRC and FLAS Funding for 2018-2022

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) and the Center for International Education (CIE) were both awarded highly competitive 2018-2022 Title VI National Resource Center (NRC) and Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) funding by the U.S. Department of Education. Being recognized as a National Resource Center is considered a prestigious designation for international and area studies centers within the U.S.

CLACS partners in a Wisconsin consortium with UW-Madison’s Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian Studies Program. CLACS received approximately $600,000 over the 4-year grant cycle. The NRC portion will support research and teaching across campus, along with public engagement projects, including regional and national outreach programing for K-16 educators.

CLACS was awarded FLAS support for students studying less-commonly taught languages of the Americas. Undergraduate students can apply for fellowships to study Portuguese at UWM, or an abroad institution. Graduate students can apply for a summer portable fellowship for intensive language study of Portuguese, Haitian Creole, or indigenous languages of the Americas.

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies has been continuously funded as a National Resource Center since 1965.
