All J-1 scholars and their J-2 dependents must have health insurance that meets or exceeds the minimum requirements set by the U.S. Department of State during their entire stay in the U.S.

The Department of State has recently made changes to the health insurance requirements for J-1 and J-2 exchange visitors. In general the minimum coverage levels have increased. The new insurance requirements are briefly outlined below:

  • Major medical benefits per accident or illness: $100,000 (formerly $50,000)
  • Medical evacuation: $50,000 (formerly $10,000)
  • Repatriation of remains to home country: $25,000 (formerly $7,500)
  • Deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness
  • Coinsurance not to exceed 25% of the covered benefits per accident or illness.

Please note that the above information highlights the major requirements contained in the regulations.

You are responsible for making sure that you and your J-2 dependents have insurance which meets or exceeds these standards for the entirety of your stay as a J-1 Exchange Visitor. In addition to the required minimum levels and types of coverage, you and any accompanying spouse and dependent(s), also may be subject to the requirements of the Affordable Care Act.
