Biological Sciences Virtual Colloquium: Physical and Chemical Dispersion of Marine Crude Oil Spills and Effects of Dispersed Oil on Marine Food Webs

October 22, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Dr. Edward J. Buskey, Professor and Interim Director of the Marine Science Institute at The University of Texas at Austin, will present a talk about his research entitled, “Physical and Chemical Dispersion of Marine Crude Oil Spills and Effects of Dispersed Oil on Marine Food Webs.” Learn more about Dr. Buskey’s work here.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill, also called the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, was the largest marinoil spill in history. This oil spill was caused by an April 20, 2010 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig—located in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 41 miles (66 km) off the coast of Louisiana—and its subsequent sinking on April 22. With the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative, one mobilized researchers from many academic institutions to use the sorry situation for investigations into the effects and remedies of oil spills. Dr. Buskey will show us the results from one group of scientists. Dr. Buskey is the Principal Investigator of the DROPPS consortium.

The presentation will begin at 4:00 PM via Microsoft Teams, preceded by an informal Q&A from 3:45 – 4:00. Click here to join the meeting, via Microsoft Teams.
