Biological Sciences Virtual Colloquium: Odor Trails and Orientation: Revealing the Underwater World of Smell

October 29, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Dr. Paul A. Moore, Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Bowling Green State University, will present a talk about his research entitled, “Odor Trails and Orientation: Revealing the Underwater World of Smell.” Learn more about Dr. Moore’s work here.

In the aquatic world, where light is limited, many organisms use the hidden trails of odors to locate food or mates and avoid predators. For years these tendrils of chemical stimuli have remain elusive to measurement and our understanding of how aquatic animals use odor cues to perform many of their basic behaviors has lagged behind other senses. Even the simplest of questions, “how does a crayfish find food?” is out of reach because of our lack of understanding about the aquatic chemical world. Applying advances in fluid dynamics and organic chemistry to animal behavior, we have made strides to understand what animals perceive with their ‘noses’ during chemically-mediated behaviors. In this talk, Dr. Moore will take you inside the mind of a crayfish as it senses its chemosensory landscape to find food.

The presentation will begin at 4:00 PM via Zoom, preceded by an informal Q&A from 3:45 – 4:00. Click here to join the meeting, via Zoom (Meeting ID: 939 9483 7715; Passcode: 716495).
