Biological Sciences Colloquium: Dr. Vera Strogolova

February 15, 2023 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Dr. Vera Strogolova, CTO, scientist at Strong Microbials, will present a talk about her work entitled, “Business of Bacteria.” Read more about Strong Microbials here.

As researchers debate whether to reduce the number of biology graduate students, biology graduates nonetheless create value in education, science communication, and business. The perceived “glut” of scientists spilling over to positions outside of academia makes it possible to more effectively disseminate the fruits of the scientific process, to impact more diverse audiences than ever before, and to increase access to sustainable biological products in industries such as agriculture, which still heavily relies on chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
Strong Microbials is a small Milwaukee-based company that provides microbiological solutions to improve agricultural processes. Strong Microbials’ primary product is a probiotic for honey bees. The goal of this product is to replenish the microbes lost due to environmental challenges and beekeeping practices. Strong Microbials was co-founded by Slava and Vera Strogolov and has a total of 11 employees. We will discuss our background and how we ended up with bacteria and bees.
Since 2019, Strong Microbials operates a biotech facility manufacturing Bacillus fermentation products (bacteria) for this market. With the goals of continuous improvement, increased output, and creating a training program for new scientists, Strong Microbials plans to meet increased demand for domestic industrial fermentation. In summary, combining one’s interests and education can provide unique career opportunities for biology graduates.

The presentation will begin at 4:00 PM in Latham S160, preceded by an informal Q&A from 3:45 – 4:00 PM.
