Biological Sciences Colloquium: Dr. Kristin Ciezki

March 29, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Dr. Kristin Ciezki, Director of the Therapeutic Accelerator Program at the Medical College of Wisconsin, will present a talk about her work entitled, “Careers for Scientists Beyond Academia: Outlook, Options, and Preparation.”

The abstract is as follows:

The overwhelming majority of PhD candidates are now heading for careers outside of academe. Traditionally graduate programs have not offered significant educational content on career-preparedness and skill building for jobs outside of academic research. As the number of tenure-track faculty positions continues to decrease while numbers of Masters and PhD-prepared scientists have rapidly increased worldwide over the past several decades, it is important for trainee-level scientists to take personal possession of their competency set development for non-academic careers. With the enactment of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, $280 billion in new funding has been committed for fiscal years 2023-2027 which will bolster the entire scientific infrastructure of the United States and create a new wave of career opportunities for scientists. Additionally, federal investment of $10 billion in regional technology and innovation hubs across the country will usher in further career opportunities in regions that were previously underdeveloped in innovation sector businesses and advanced manufacturing. There is no better time than the present to engage in exploration of the highly diverse careers available to scientists outside of academic institutions. In this colloquium we will examine the current economic climate of science and biohealth, discuss how to write an effective resume, share career development resources, and introduce a broad overview of diverse career opportunities featuring studies of the careers of example scientists.

The presentation will begin at 4:00 PM in Lapham S160, preceded by an informal reception from 3:45 – 4:00 PM.
