Good morning, colleagues. Here are this week’s updates from Academic Affairs:

UW System Strategic Planning Listening Sessions 

Just a reminder that Wednesday we are all invited to provide input for UW System strategic planning at the following times and locations:

  • 10-11:30 a.m. General listening session, UWM Student Union Ballroom
  • 5-6:30 p.m. General listening session, UWM Student Union Ballroom

If you wish to participate in the morning listening session, in which UWM will gather input, please RSVP here. If you wish to participate in the evening listening session, in which UW System will gather input and community members will participate, please RSVP here. Kudos

– David Stack has been appointed Interim Associate Vice President and Chief Information Officer with UW System Administration. Congratulations, David. We’ll miss you!

– Michael J. Mikoś’s paper, “Milosz – Translator of Polish Poetry into English,” appeared in a book dealing with Polish contemporary philology and was published by the University of Opole in Poland. Well done, Michael!

– Garry Jean-Pierre, WiscAMP Scholar from UWM, has been selected as a Power and Energy Society (PES) Scholarship Plus Initiative recipient for the 2015-16 academic year. This scholarship recognizes undergraduate students who have declared a major in Electrical Engineering, are high achievers with strong GPAs, have distinctive extracurricular activities, and are committed to exploring the power and energy field. Each scholarship recipient receives $2,000 USD and can receive funding for up to 3 years. Congratulations, Garry!

Correction

Last week, I highlighted new faculty from the College of Health Sciences and listed Barbara Pauloski, Assistant Professor. In fact, she is an Associate Professor.

The Week

Monday
I will attend a charter school presentation with Dean Alan Shoho, followed by the Chancellor’s Expanded Cabinet meeting. In the afternoon, I have standing meetings with Tom Luljak and Sally Lundeen. I also have my weekly meeting with my staff.

Tuesday
My morning is filled with budget meetings. I have several meetings in the afternoon, including the quarterly development meeting with the Chancellor and Pat Borger, as well as a meeting with theStudent Association.

Wednesday
I start the day with the Deans Morning Meeting, followed by an Academic Budget and Planning Committee meeting with the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare and my weekly meeting with the Chancellor. In the afternoon, I have standing meetings as well as a meeting with the Library Executive Cabinet Committee.

Thursday
I have standing meetings with Joely Urdan and Gesele Durham. In the afternoon, I’ll be at UW-Madison as a “Telling Our Story” Panelist.

Friday
I start the day with standing meetings. I have a three-hour lunch meeting with all of the Department Chairs (I had a similar meeting last week and there is no specific agenda and we discuss any topic that is of interest – last week we spent a lot of time discussing the work of CCOET – Kyle Swanson and Bob Greenstreet were able to join last week). In the afternoon I meet with Robin van Harpen and John Reisel – and next week we start November!

University Staff Conference

Rhetorical Leadership Lecture
– I hope you can join us this Friday, October 30 from 3:00-4:15 p.m. in Merrill 131 for this year’s Rhetorical Leadership Lecture. Jeremy Engels, Associate Professor at Penn State, will present, “The Rhetoric of Gratitude:  From Debt to Freedom.” There will be an informal reception immediately following in Greene Hall.

UWM Night with the Admirals
– Discounted lower-level tickets are available now for the Milwaukee Admirals’ November 21 game at the BMO Harris Bradley Center. Tickets can be purchased online today!

From the UWM Libraries
– Thomas Haigh, School of Information Studies, presents a talk, “Working on ENIAC: The Lost Labors of the Information Age,” on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the Digital Humanities Lab located on the second floor of the Golda Meir Library.

– Caroline Seymour-Jorn, French, Italian, and Comparative Literature, Anna Mansson McGinty, Geography and Women’s and Gender Studies, and Kristin M. Sziarto, Geography, present the 2015 Fromkin Memorial Lecture, “Social Justice Activism among Muslims in Milwaukee,”  on Thursday at 4 p.m. in the fourth floor Conference Center of the Golda Meir Library.

– The Libraries announce the Call for Proposals for the 2016 Fromkin Grant and Lectureship, with a deadline of December 30, 2015.

Spirit Day
– Celebrate Black & Gold Spirit Day Friday, November 6 by becoming a Spirit Liaison for your office. Lead your office to victory in the Most Spirited Office competition, and a Pizza Hut Pizza Party for 20 is yours! Volunteer and learn more.

Food Drive
– The Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research (CCBLLR) is coordinating the Campus-Wide Food Drive, taking place October 26-December 1. To volunteer as a food collection box captain, email nmglaser@uwm.edu.

From the Zilber School of Public Health
– The Zilber School of Public Health will host a panel discussion on food systems and health equity as the next installment of its free On Public Health lecture series on Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m. in Zilber 590.

Other
– The All Blacks versus the Wallabies in the Rugby World Cup final (think it will be the All Blacks) and well done to Arsenal (2-1 against Everton!)
