May 2, 2016  |  News & Events, Provost's Updates

Good morning, colleagues. Here are this week’s updates from Academic Affairs:

Kudos

– We are so proud of all of the undergraduate students who showcased their research at last week’s Undergraduate Research Symposium. Congratulations and well done!

– Congratulations to the 2016-17 Education Technology Fee-funded one-time proposals: PantherFile Maintenance and Adobe Enterprise Cloud License (UITS); Large Format Color Printing for Students and UWM Campus Events Calendar (University Relations and Communications); Extend Online Tutoring (Panther Academic Support Services); Capturing Student Research & Dissertations through UWM Commons, increased allocation for subscriptions; Digital Resources – Ebooks (UWM Libraries); UWM Open Textbook/OER Adoption Project (Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and UWM Libraries); and Using Office 365 for Teaching and Learning (Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning). Continuing projects for UITS, the Libraries, PASS, University Relations and Communications, and the ArcGIS Server were also approved. Thanks to the Committee for its hard work!

– Congratulations also to the 2016 Accessibility Resource Center (ARC) Excellence Award winners: Adam Hudson, Senior Lecturer, School of Information Studies; Leah Rineck, Math Coordinator and Senior Lecturer, Mathematical Sciences;  Sarah Ruder, Web Development, Mobile Communication & Media Relations, University Relations; Jeb Willenbring, Professor, Mathematical Sciences; and Lillian Folk, Interim Assistant Dean/Administrative Program Specialist, College of Health Sciences. The Excellence Awards recognize UWM faculty and staff who have demonstrated excellent services to students with disabilities, ARC staff, and other ARC constituents, such as parents, teachers and advocates. The awardees will be honored on May 11 at 1 p.m., in Union 240.  All are welcome!

Enrollment and Admissions data: Update from Gesele Durham
Assessment and Institutional Research has recently created SharePoint versions of the Comparison of Enrollment and Comparison of Admissions dashboards. These new dashboards have several advantages over the previous tools available to campus including:

  • Use of SharePoint makes them accessible to both Mac and PC users
  • Browser compatibility is no longer an issue – will work with multiple browsers
  • Users will no longer be required to access the Query Library – which means they will also no longer need to go through the multiple permission steps to gain access
  • Users will no longer need to have access to Hyperion software

Both the Comparison of Enrollment and Comparison of Admissions dashboards will have 2 versions: one providing historical trend data over multiple years and  one providing point in time comparisons to date.

You will need to enter your epanther ID and password to log in to Office 365 and access the new dashboards, available at:

The Week:

Monday
The Chancellor’s Cabinet meets and I meet with VC Robin Van Harpen, Dean Sally Lundeen, and a delegation from Hessen (Wisconsin’s  German sister state). CEMAT meets and agenda items include a discussion on our enrollment numbers; graduate student recognition of faculty/staff; MSEP Graduate Tuition; financial aid prior year; and a preliminary review of fall 2016 CEMAT scholarship offers. In the evening, I will attend a reception celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Sister State relationship between the States of Hessen and Wisconsin. The launching of a joint UWM-Children’s Hospital Institute of Child and Family Well-Being will also take place this evening.

Tuesday
I have a day packed with meetings with direct reports. I also have a meeting with a donor.

Wednesday
I begin the day meeting with a delegation from Bowling Green State University. The Chancellor and I are having lunch with the Community Engaged Scholars Network and I meet with representatives of a new company focused on instructional quality. Dean Rodney Swain and I have also our bi-weekly meeting later in the afternoon.

Thursday
I’m attending the Academic Planning and Budget Committee, a capital budget planning meeting, and an all-school meeting at the School of Education. In the afternoon, I have my regular meeting with the Chancellor, and I also have a phone meeting with UW System Vice President Jim Henderson, Vice Provost Phyllis King, and Mathematics Chair Kyle Swanson on remedial math.

Friday
In the afternoon, I’ll attend a school brainstorming meeting with deans, faculty, and staff from UWM’s health-related academic areas (College of Health Sciences, College of Nursing, and Zilber School of Public Health). I’m attending the First Friday event (see below!) and in the evening, I’m doing the welcome for the African American Graduation Celebration.
