June 20, 2016  |  News & Events, Provost's Updates

Good morning, Colleagues. Here are this week’s updates from Academic Affairs.

Kudos

Sandra McLellan

The Journal Sentinel ran a story in its Saturday edition on the $1.5M NIH grant that Professor Sandra McLellan (Professor in SFS) received to develop a database of the genetic information from freshwater bacteria. Congratulations again, Sandra!

Nan Kim

Nan Kim (Associate Professor, History), who earlier this month was invited to speak at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., where she introduced her book, Memory, Reconciliation, and Reunions in South Korea: Crossing the Divide, and participated in a panel discussion. Congratulations, Nan!

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

The Bernard Osher Foundation has awarded an additional $1 million endowment to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UWM. This is a remarkable accomplishment for everyone involved including our volunteer leadership, many generous members, the hard-working and dedicated UWM Development staff and all the supportive staff members from the School of Continuing Education. Well done to all!

SOIS doctoral students

SOIS shared with me the following news regarding two of their doctoral students:

– Laura Elien Ridenour was selected as one of the 2016-2017 ASIS&T New Leaders. Laura will be given the award at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology in Copenhagen, Denmark in October. Congratulations, Laura!

– Katie Chamberlain Kritikos was chosen to receive the 2016 Gordon M. Conable Scholarship enabling her to attend the ALA Annual Conference that begins this week in Orlando, Florida. Well done, Katie!

Announcements

Fall Welcome

Show your Panther Pride and volunteer for a Fall Welcome event and a move-in shift. Connect with other staff, show your support to our new and returning students, and get a free Fall Welcome t-shirt!

From the Accessibility Resource Center
Starting July 1, the Accessibility Resource Center will be coordinating sign language interpreting and captioning services for all campus departments. While ARC has always provided this service, we are now taking it one step further and will be contracting with agencies directly for you! This will assist with centralizing services and improving control of quality and cost. All billing associated with these services will be done internally, without the need for a separate direct services charge. All campus offices and departments are asked to contact ARC for interpreting and captioning service needs. Please take a look at our new online form for requests and also read the centralization committee report.
For additional questions, please contact Interim Assistant Director Cassie Franklin at cassief@uwm.edu or 414-894-7044. We look forward to continuing to assist you in providing equal access at UWM for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Updates from UITS

– New Look for Office 365

Office 365’s Log-in page will look a bit different starting July 1. It has been updated with UWM branding. You can log-in and access your account in the same way, features will all remain the same, and you will still be able to use a custom design theme, if you choose.

– pantherFILE is Retiring
With the retirement of pantherFILE, it’s time to get better acquainted with OneDrive and CampusPress! Come to one of our demo sessions or workshops and get answers to any questions you may have. Please visit our pantherFILE retirement website for dates and times.
