Diante Johnson is a senior at UW-Milwaukee majoring in Biomedical Science on the premedical route. Diante began his involvement in research in the summer of 2019 through ROADS at MCW working as an intern for the All of Us Research Program headed by Dr. Jeffery Whittle. During the fall and winter of 2019-2020 his freshman year of undergrad, he worked as an intern again in the PINT clinic at MCW headed by Dr. Amy Heffelfinger. Diante later became an intern at MCW in 2021 through DSHREP in the Cell Biology, Neurobiology, and Anatomy department under Dr. Pui Lam. This research focused on the development of photopharmacological tools using endogenously expressed zebra fish genes and CRISPR-Cas9 technology. His main role was to identify the Genes of Interest (GOI’s) using a gene sequencing tool and meticulously organizing data in a spreadsheet for it to be used with the Cas9 protein and the CRISPR technology. Diante’s research interest includes pathology, genetics, and public health disparities– specifically the public health disparities focused on North American immigrants from Eastern medicine practicing countries. Cancer has affected Diante in several different ways throughout his life, so he is looking forward to being a part of the change that can come from the Cancer Center Research program.
