UWM professor Mo Zell named Woman of Influence

Mo Zell, a professor and chair of the architecture department at UWM’s School of Architecture and Urban Planning, has been named to the Milwaukee Business Journal’s 2021 Women of Influence list.

Zell, who has taught at UWM since 2008, was named to the list in the mentor category. The Business Journal honored 28 women overall in the list released this week.

“These women are the cream of the crop of Milwaukee’s professional community,” the Business Journal said in announcing the honors. “They’ve grown businesses, created products, inspired future generations and made southeastern Wisconsin a better place to live and work.”

As department chair, Zell oversees the only professional program in Wisconsin accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. She also has led projects including the school’s externship program, SUPERjury Women in Design Milwaukee and the Mobile Design Box, an initiative that aims to connect the school and community through a pop-up gallery.

Zell describes the focus of her research as the confluence of architecture and installation. She is principal of the design and research firm bauenstudio, which has been recognized with design awards from the Boston Society of Architecture, the Boston Society of Landscape Architecture and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. Zell is the author of “Architectural Drawing Course.”

The Business Journal named Colleen Galambos, a UWM professor of social work, to last year’s Women of Influence list.
