UW-Milwaukee’s Alvaro Saar Rios, assistant professor of playwriting and analysis in the Peck School of the Arts, received a Distinguished Play Award as the author of “Luchadora” – a play about a young girl who explores her family’s heritage after she discovers a pink wrestling mask from the world of Mexican wrestling, known as lucha libre.

The award from The American Alliance for Theatre & Education was in the category of plays that are primarily for upper and secondary school age audiences.

In addition to teaching, Rios is a professional writer and performer and is the co-founder of The Royal Mexican Players, a national touring performance troupe.

Based in Bethesda, Maryland, The American Alliance for Theatre & Education serves a collective of theatre artists, educators and scholars committed to transforming young people and communities through the theatre arts.
