The Nathan and Pearl Berkowitz Mitzvah Fund

Established December 21, 2012, the Nathan and Pearl Berkowitz Mitzvah Fund (Mitzvah Fund) was created to foster greater understanding among students from various religious, cultural, ethnic and lifestyle student groups, and to engage students in working together to create and implement projects for the benefits of others.

The Mitzvah Fund has been used for student leadership training, professional development, and cultural and educational programs/events. The Mitzvah Fund has funded the following (not an exhaustive list):

  • Desi Student Association – Supplies for spring cultural events, Spring 2022
  • Zeta Sigma Chi Multicultural Sorority, Inc – 5th Annual Break the Yard, Spring 2022
  • Gamma Phi Beta Sorority – Aly Raisman Distinguished Lecture Series, Spring 2022
  • Art for All – Community Mural, Fall 2022
  • Community of Creative Arts – Open Mic Event, Fall 2022
  • Filipino Student Union – FACT Conference, Fall 2022
  • Signing Student Association – Eyeth Day, Spring 2023
  • Asian Student Union – Cultural Entertainment Night, Spring 2023
  • Hmong Student Association – I Am Hmoob, Spring 2023
  • Honors Association for Research and Presentation – National Collegiate Honors Council Conference, Fall 2023
  • Society of Women Engineers – Dr. Mae Jemison Distinguished Lecture Series, Fall 2023
  • Student Organizations Collaborative Networking Event, Spring 2024
  • Muslim Student Association – Embracing Virtue in the Last Ten Nights of Ramadan, Spring 2024
  • COLORLIT – Talk by Mimi Mondal, Spring 2024

The Mitzvah Fund Committee decides which proposals are funded from among those submitted. This committee includes UWM students, faculty, staff and community members. All events sponsored by the Mitzvah Fund must recognize the Baye Foundation for its generous support.
