WHY INCLUSIVE EXCELLENCE?
“The question of development must mean and include all segments of society.”- V. Gangadharan
The Inclusive Excellence Center is the next necessary step in the evolutionary process of creating a more equitable campus climate by facilitating a welcoming and inviting community and providing support for other UWM groups.Through our efforts we hope to develop a rich tradition of collective involvement and equity to ensure folks feel included, engaged, and connected.
INCLUDE. ENGAGE. CONNECT
WHAT DOES “INCLUDE” MEAN TO THE INCLUSIVE EXCELLENCE CENTER?
The Inclusive Excellence Center works directly with UW-Milwaukee’s Access, Diversity and Inclusion Team to develop inclusive policies for admission, hiring and retention. Through our discussions we have developed some key definitions for diversity and culture.
All knowledge and values shared by a group. Professional, relational, familial, etc. boundaries within which an individual operates. These performative boundaries provide a sense of belonging to an individual, society and/or group, based on the values shared by those within said society or group.
Individual differences (e.g. personality, learning styles, and life experiences) and group/social differences (e.g. race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, country of origin, and ability as well as cultural, political, religious, or other affiliations) that can be engaged in the service of learning. It is also critical to recognize that even within legally defined groups, tremendous diversity exists within diversity. In other words, every individual differs from another, even if belonging to the same racial/ethnic group. Individuals differ by virtue of their unique location at the intersection of age, gender identity or expression, ability, socioeconomic, regional/geographic, and religious circumstances.
