Geography at UWM

Why geography?

Are you interested in climate change and its effects on the environment and society?

Are you interested in maps, satellite images, and geographic information?

Are you interested in such topics as racial segregation and inequality; environmental and social justice; gender, sexuality, and space; ethnic, national, and religious differences and identities; social vulnerability to diseases and hazards; population and migration patterns; or urban and regional economic development?

Do you enjoy natural sciences, social sciences, AND humanities?

If you said “yes” to any of the above—or to all of the above—then geography at UWM may be the perfect fit for you.

Along with internationally recognized expertise on these topics and techniques, UWM Geography faculty bring a passion for excellent teaching and a strong commitment to problems facing the city of Milwaukee, the state of Wisconsin, and the Great Lakes region.

We offer a wide range of degree opportunities, including BA/BS, MA/MS, PhD, and certificate programs. Geography also makes an excellent second major to complement a major in Urban Studies, Conservation and Environmental Science, Global Studies, and several other programs—and it’s a great match for students interested in the Urban Planning Certificate.

What can I do with a geography degree?

Our graduates are pursuing amazing careers in such fields as urban planning and policy, geographic information systems (GIS), geospatial design, environmental consulting and education, epidemiology and environmental health, community organizing, academic geography, and many more. To learn more about what you can do with a geography degree, check out the American Association of Geographers careers page.
