Sommer is a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, Turtle clan and is currently serving as the PI and program coordinator for the Office of Indian Education Professional Development Grants supporting students who are earning Teaching and Administrative Leadership degrees. She has experience as an elementary public school teacher in multiple grades and has supported and worked with preservice teachers in the Early Childhood Dept. as well as students in American Indian and First Nations studies as an adjunct instructor at both UW Milwaukee and UW Green Bay.
She received her B.S. from UW Milwaukee with a degree in Psychology and in Education; earned her M.A. in Teacher Leadership from UW Madison; and is currently a First Nations Education Doctoral candidate at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. Her research interests are within the areas of Indigenous Pedagogy and Education, Curriculum Development and Indigenous Leadership and Teacher Education.
