F-1 On-Campus Employment

F-1 students are eligible for on-campus employment at UWM for up to 20 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters while classes are in session and over 20 hours per week during winter and summer break periods.

F-1 Off-Campus Employment

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is authorization for F-1 students for off-campus work experience that is required as part of UWM studies.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is authorization for employment in your field of study either before or after completion of a degree. 

OPT STEM Extension

Certain students who earned degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fields may apply for a 24-month extension of their post-completion optional practical training (OPT). 

Economic Hardship
Economic Hardship is off-campus employment authorization granted by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for F-1 students facing unforeseen economic hardship. You must have been in F-1 status for one year to be eligible to apply.

J-1 Employment

J-1 On-Campus Employment

J-1 students are eligible for on-campus employment at UWM for up to 20 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters while classes are in session and over 20 hours per week during winter and summer break periods.

Academic Training
J-1 students are eligible for employment authorization called Academic Training. Academic Training must be authorized by ISSS prior to beginning the employment. The duration of eligibility varies by your J-1 category and length of your program of study. Meet with your program coordinator in ISSS to learn more.

Social Security

The U.S. government assigns Social Security numbers to people who are authorized to work in the United States and who have employment. A Social Security number is only required if you work in the U.S. and can be obtained with proof of legal employment. F-1 visa status allows students to work while in the U.S., under certain restrictions.

Tax Resources

All students who were in the U.S. during the tax year must file federal and state tax returns whether or not income was earned.
