“Recent wildfires have made international news because of their devastating effects. From Fort McMurray to Gatlinburg to much of the West Coast, many of last year’s fires had significant effects both locally and regionally. While the basics of fire weather are relatively easy to understand, forecasting weather’s impact on fire behavior and fire spread remains difficult, especially in complex terrain”.
“This presentation will begin with an overview of the foundational science of wildland fires and fire weather. Focus will then shift to highlighting some of the current challenges and research questions in fire weather. Finally, some results from current research into fire-weather prediction and near-fire circulations will be shown”.
