The Clam Lake Mounds

Abstract: Recent investigations by Wisconsin Historical Society staff have added new information to what was learned in 1935 by the joint UW-Madison and Milwaukee Public Museum archaeological expedition to Clam Lake in Burnett County, Wisconsin. The results of the 1935 investigations startled the participants and the public. They changed the way in which they understood the ancient history of Wisconsin and the Western Great Lakes. Even today the results of 1935 investigations are central to the understanding of the history of the area even as many mysteries about the creation of this unique cultural landscape remain unresolved.
