Green Building Data Base Verification and Analysis- Ongoing Work on Rules of Thumb for Net-Zero Energy Building Design

Arts & Architecture (College of the) / Architecture / Architecture & Urban Planning (School of)

Description

Starting in 2021, I (P.I. Wasley) and SURF students Jessica Dray, Kaylee Ann Bertrand and others created a data-base of green building projects in Northern Europe. I subsequently taught at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences April- June of 2022 and will return to do so again April- June, 2023. I have used these research trips to travel extensively in Germany, visiting sites that we’ve cataloged and finding new sites. The SURF research to date has been invaluable in identifying sites and making it easy to coordinate travel to them. The objective will again be to create in-depth case studies of a selection of the projects, as well as to continue to identify new projects. SURF students will be doing library and internet-based research, assembling explanatory text, images, and contact people. As much of this material will be in German, the work will involve interpreting and rewriting rough translations made with online tools. My larger objective is to establish an ongoing student and faculty exchange with Frankfurt U. around issues of green building practice in Germany. These case studies all contribute to what we hope will be an extensive semester abroad travel program.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Conduct internet and library research to identify available resources and collect as much information as possible about sites that I have now photographed. Document those findings 1.) in our ever-expanding Green Building Excel data base 2.) graphically through an established case study template and 3.) on our new Google Map layer for Green Buildings. One critical task of the case studies will be to identify parties that would be appropriate to interview to build a deeper understanding of the designs. I will be contacting people that we identify with the hopes of setting up Zoom interviews. If interviews to take place, the SURF students would participate in these interviews. They will then write up interview notes, follow up on leads generated by the interviews with online research and/or additional interviews.
