Jillian Cervantes

Jillian Cervantes is pursuing a mathematics major with a computer science minor. She researches dominating sets in graph theory with Dr. Pamela E. Harris of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Jillian won the Outstanding Presentation Award for her graph theory poster presentation at the 2023 UWM Undergraduate Research Symposium. Additionally, she has conducted research at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute/SLMath in Berkeley as a participant in the MSRI-UP research experience for undergraduates. At MSRI-UP, Jillian collaborated with Emanuel Ayala López and Katherine Elizabeth Lovelace on a research project to optimize the detection of gravitational waves using machine learning with topological data analysis. Jillian cares deeply about math outreach; she is the president of the UWM Math Club, and a calculus tutor in the UWM Student Success Center. She plans to start a PhD program in mathematics in fall 2024, with the aim of combining her research interests of graph theory, topology, and mathematical logic. Jillian hopes to become a math professor after completing her PhD, and that her work in the field of mathematics will inspire other Latinx mathematicians to remain persistent in pursuing their goals.
