In Memory of Roy Arthur Swanson April 7, 1925 – December 15, 2020

It is with heavy hearts that the Comparative Literature Program shares news of the passing of Roy A Swanson, who was a professor of comparative literature at UWM from 1967-2003. Dr. Swanson was a beloved professor, an admired colleague, and a widely respected scholar, as well as a friend to many of us; you can read his complete obituary here.

We are profoundly touched that, in lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that donations be made to the Roy Arthur Swanson Comparative Literature Merit Scholarship, a fund that has honored Roy Swanson’s love of comparative literature and supported many students in pursuit of their own passions since 1998.

If you would like to make a gift to the RASCL Scholarship online, please donate to UWM and direct it to the scholarship simply by typing the name in the “Special Instructions” (there is no drop-down option to select it specifically). To make a donation by mail, send checks made out to “UWM Foundation” to UWM Foundation 1440 E North Ave Milwaukee, WI 53202 and designate the check for the Roy Arthur Swanson Comparative Literature Merit Scholarship in the memo line and in any correspondence you include. The link to make an online gift can be found here.

Current UWM Comparative Literature majors and minors who will be returning to UWM in Fall 2021 may be eligible to apply for the RASCL Merit Scholarship for 2021-2022. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2021. We would be honored to help continue Professor Swanson’s legacy by supporting your studies through this scholarship. The link to access more information about this scholarship and the application is here.
