International internship research and site scouting is an important part of the work of Global Studies staff. Supported by a recent National Research Center grant, Global Studies is hard at work researching new sites and internship providers to identify more options and meaningful, career enhancing experiences to meet the unique goals of Global Studies students. Over the last few years, we have traveled to Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Ghana, Italy, Japan, Portugal, South Korea, and Spain, building new relationships, visiting sites, and checking out housing accommodations and local resources to better prepare and guide students on their professional internship journeys.

Korea

Italy

As the world begins to open up for face to face experiences once again, Global Studies chose Italy as a great internship destination for Italian and non-Italian speakers alike. We visited new internship sites in Rome, Florence, Genoa, and Sorrento. See the organizations and web links on under New Internship Site Development 2021-2022 on the Internship page for details.

Ghana

In Ghana, we visited potential internship sites with Volunteer Partnerships for West Africa, the Ghanaian Public Library Authority, Unite for Site, and Saha Global.

Tokyo, Japan

Internship site scouting trip in Tokyo, Japan, October of 2019

Global Studies visited the American Chamber of Commerce, Zentern, the Intern Group, Sakae Institute of Study Abroad, and Inter-Media Japan. This trip lead to a partnership with the Intern Group resulting in a $300 discount for UWM students.

Ecuador, Galapagos Islands, and Costa Rica

Ecuador, including the Galapagos Islands, and San Jose, Costa Rica: February, 2020

This trip took place just before the Covid-19 crisis hit the US, which makes it particularly special. In Ecuador site visits were made to projects run by Child Family Health International, (CFHI), potential internship provider Academia Latinoamerica, the American Chamber of Commerce in Quito, and Projects Abroad. In San Jose, visits were made to the Rainforest Experience and study abroad and internship provider Maximo Nivel.
