Both Study Abroad and Internships are valuable experiential learning opportunities that allow students to gain new skills, forms of knowledge, and training outside of the classroom. We encourage all students to take advantage of these opportunities while at UWM!

While Comparative Literature, French, and Italian majors are all encouraged to include study abroad within their course of study, Global Studies majors are required to engage in at least one experience abroad. Global Studies majors choose two experiential learning opportunities as part of their studies: a study abroad, an international internship, or a domestic internship at an international company or organization.

We recommend students work closely with their advisor beginning about 18 months prior to traveling abroad. This will leave ample time to explore destinations, secure travel requirements, and plan for academic coursework to be taken prior to and during the time abroad.

For internships, Global Studies maintains close relationships with organizations around the world to help students find meaningful internship placements that align with their career exploration goals. The internship pages here include examples of recent student experiences and information about some of our partnerships. Explore the sites where you can intern!

Opportunities abound around the world for students to live and study outside of the U.S. for a few weeks, a semester or a full year.
