In memoriam: Ihab Hassan

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Vilas Professor Emeritus Ihab Hassan, of English and Comparative Literature, passed away this past Thursday evening. A leading figure in the fields of comparative and postmodern literatures and the author of 15 books and more than 300 articles, Dr. Hassan was also an actively engaged and tremendously generous member of the UWM community. The College of Letters and Science had been planning a symposium for his 90th birthday called “Beyond Crisis: The Humanities in Renewal.” The event will now be a celebration of his life, and will take place on November 19 at 3:30pm in the Zelazo Center. More information on that will be shared here as the details develop.

We wish to extend our deepest condolences to Ihab’s wife, Sally, and his family. There will not be a funeral, and in lieu of gifts or flowers, the family would like friends to remember Ihab through gifts to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Foundation in support of the College of Letters and Science Lecture in the Humanities.

[Gifts in memory of Ihab Hassan can be made payable to the UWM Foundation, Inc. to support UWM’s College of Letters & Science Humanities Lecture.  Gifts can be mailed to UWM Development, PO Box 413, Milwaukee, WI 53201-0413.  To make a gift online click here https://givetouwm.uwmfdn.org/ and direct your gift to the College of Letters & Science and add “In Memory of Ihab Hassan” in the Special Instructions field.  For more information call Christina McCaffery (414) 229-4963.]
