This past summer, the UWM Department of Geosciences – along with dozens of other departments and organizations – signed on to the Call to Action for an Anti-Racist Science Community from Geoscientists of Color: Listen, Act, Lead. As recommended in the Call to Action, we have now removed the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) as a requirement for admission to our graduate programs. The cost and structure of the GRE have historically served as barriers to wider participation in the Geosciences, and recent studies have demonstrated that the GRE is not an effective predictor of student success. The Department of Geosciences remains committed to promoting an inclusive educational experience, and this action is just one small step in removing barriers within our community.
