Student and Former Dean Honored at Sea Grant Event

The 2023 Sea Grant and University of Wisconsin Water Resources Institute (WRI) Fellows Convocation and Awards Event honored four award winners, 21 postgraduate fellows, three undergraduate scholarship winners and 61 summer undergraduate scholars.

Among those honored were Val Klump, former dean of the School of Freshwater Sciences, who received the 2023 Wisconsin Sea Grant Actionable Science Award. Klump said he had received 14 research grants from the Wisconsin Sea Grant program during his 38 years at UW-Milwaukee. His work on how carbon and nutrients move through and influence the Great Lakes has informed policies set by the International Joint Commission and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Undergraduate student Daniel Sherman receive one of three Carl J. Weston Scholarships for his Wisconsin Sea Grant-supported project on aquaculture. Sherman works in the laboratory of Dong-Fang Deng, who heads aquaculture research at the School of Freshwater Sciences.

Other awardees included Congresswoman Gwen Moore, who received a 2023 Friend of Sea Grant Award; Julie Kinzelman, who was named Wisconsin Sea Grant Great Lakes Champion for 2023; and Larry MacDonald, who received the 2023 Wisconsin Sea Grant Distinguished Service Award.
