Freshwater Colloquium: What we know (and don’t know) about freshwater salinization

February 19 @ 3:00 pm - 3:50 pm

Dr. Hilary Dugan will present “What we know (and don’t know) about freshwater salinization” as part of the School of Freshwater Sciences spring colloquium.

Hilary Dugan is an associate professor at the Center for Limnology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. As a limnologist, Hilary studies how terrestrial and atmospheric changes, such as warming air temperatures or land use patterns, alter biogeochemical fluxes and aquatic processes in lakes. Her research balances field-based programs, which rely heavily on sensor networks, with the use and development of analytical models, and the application of geophysical and geospatial tools. Her research focus is on temperate and polar lakes, with sites spanning from Wisconsin to Antarctica.

Road salt pollution has led to the salinization of many freshwater ecosystems in the Midwest US. This talk will focus on what we know about freshwater salinization dynamics and trends, and what questions remain surrounding the future of our freshwater resources.

This presentation is open to students, faculty, staff, alumni and the public.

The Colloquium series creates a platform where students, faculty, and scientists discuss emergent issues related to freshwater science research. Invited speakers present specific topics of their research, as well as policy, commercial, and industrial experiences.
