5/22/20 Furloughs

Hello FPM Staff,

The FPM Engagement Team and I are implementing a new communication plan. There have been many changes in our personal and work lives over the last two months. The number and rate of the changes can be challenging to keep up with, so we are planning to send brief weekly updates via email and through a posting on the FPM website. We will select topics that directly impact FPM employees and provide FPM specific information. If you have questions you think should be addressed, please let me (or anyone on an Engagement Team) know.

Position Specific Furlough
COVID-19 has created severe financial impacts to UWM. The Chancellor shared specifics about these impacts in his message on May 1. Although many cost saving measures have been implemented, Position Specific Furloughs were implemented to create additional savings. 98 FPM employees who currently cannot work due to the disruption of campus operations or those performing duties and responsibilities that are not mission critical at the present time were placed on Position Specific Furlough, either May 2 or May 16. This is a very difficult situation, but is financially necessary for UWM.

Intermittent Furlough
Additional savings will be generated through broad implementation of intermittent furloughs to most faculty, academic staff and university staff. Staff making less than $15 per hour will not participate in intermittent furloughs. Most staff will take intermittent furloughs on 9 assigned days between June 2020 and June 2021. Staff with salaries above $100,000 will take the 9 assigned days plus 4 or 8 additional days based on their salary. More specific information about intermittent furloughs can be found here.

Assigned Days for 12-month employees are:
  1. Friday, June 19, 2020
  2. Friday, July 3, 2020
  3. Friday August 21, 2020
  4. Friday, October 30, 2020
  5. Friday, November 27, 2020
  6. Monday, December 28, 2020
  7. Friday, January 22, 2021
  8. Friday, March 26, 2021
  9. Friday, May 28, 2021

Scenario Planning
It is important for you to know that UWM has established a number of teams to work on scenario planning for the fall with the hope that students, faculty and staff, at some level, will return to campus. Many of the planning teams include FPM staff from Facilities Services, Environmental Services, University Safety and Assurances and Campus Planning. We will provide more specific related to scenario planning in next week’s update.

If you have ideas about information you would like to be included in the upcoming postings, please let us know.

I hope you all have a safe and healthy Memorial Day weekend. Please be kind and respectful to yourself, your families and each other during this time. Your on-going dedication and efforts to FPM and UWM are greatly appreciated.

Gratefully,

Melissa
