Aaron Roerdink Ph.D. ’04 Appointed Associate Dean of Learning Enrichment at Central College

UWM Chemistry Department alum Aaron Roerdink (Ph.D. Analytical Chemistry ’04) was recently appointed as Associate Dean of Learning Enrichment and Associate Professor-in-Residence of Chemistry at Central College in Pella, Iowa. After completing his Ph.D with the Chemistry Department, he eventually became a professor of Chemistry at Heidelberg University where he served as Chair. Dr. David Petering to receive the 2023 Ernest Spaights Plaza Award at the 2023 Annual Fall Awards Ceremony

Dr. David Petering will be awarded the 2023 Ernest Spaights Plaza Award at the 2023 Annual Fall Awards Ceremony.

Dr. Holger Foetstering will be awarded the 2023 UWM Academic Staff Outstanding Performance & Service Award at the 2023 Annual Fall Awards Ceremony.

15th Annual UWM Undergraduate Research Symposium Highlights Department Research

Nineteen Chemistry & Biochemistry students presented their work at this year’s Undergraduate Research Symposium. The annual UWM Undergraduate Research Symposium celebrates the collaborations of UWM undergraduate students with our larger research community. This year, over 250 UWM students, mentored by over 130 of UWM’s faculty and research staff, presented their work.

Special honors went to Abdullah Rauf and Dhivyashree Senthil Murugan who were awarded Outstanding Presentation Awards for their poster presentations. Other students presenting work at the symposium were:

Chemistry & Biochemistry Students Earn Grants to Fund Their Undergraduate Research

Congratulations to our four students who were received Support for Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) awards this spring, 

Reuben Fortier is working with Professor Saha on a project entitled  “Covalent Drug Discovery through Machine Learning”

Noah Geluk is working with Professor Blecking on a project entitled “Investigation of Student Experiences in a STEM Literacy Course”

Kimberly Osborn is working with Professor Silvaggi on a project entitled “Cloning, Expression, Purification, and Crystallization of a Putative N-acetyltransferase from Streptomyces caelestis”

Abdullah Rauf is working with Professor Frick on a project entitled  “NAD-Capped RNA in Metabolism”

The SURF program is designed to foster faculty-student research collaborations, and funds work through which students have the opportunity to engage in thoughtful and progressively sophisticated work central to the overall research program of the principal investigator.
