Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry Scholarship or Award

This award is open to graduate students enrolled in a doctoral program in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry who have a research focus on analytical chemistry. Eligible students must be working in compound identification and quantification using chromatography methods in conjunction with mass spectrometry. We especially encourage students to apply, who have conducted collaborative work with companies focused on analytical chemistry.

Other criteria include:

• good academic standing
• in years 2 to 5 of graduate studies
• engaged in drug discovery research with a focus on bio-analytical drug characterization and advancement of mass spectrometry methodologies

Chancellor's Graduate Student Award in Chemistry

Chancellor’s Awards for graduate students in chemistry as chosen by the department. Students do not need to submit an application to be considered for this award.

Chemistry Research Excellence Award

When funds are available, merit awards for graduate students in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry engaged in exceptional research activities. No application and recipients are selected by faculty members.

Chemistry/Biochemistry Award

When funds are available, meritorious Chemistry or Biochemistry students are chosen by faculty for awards or scholarships. No awards are expected from this fund at this time.

Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry General Scholarship or Award

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry periodically awards meritorious students. There is no application process and students are selected by faculty.

Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry Scholarship or Award

Multiple awards are given for outstanding performance in chemistry research, coursework, and/or student teaching. Students are selected by the faculty and no application is needed.

Dr. Barbara J. England & Dr. Walter B. England Chemistry Graduate Research Fellowship

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry awards these fellowships to meritorious graduate students in their master’s or doctoral chemistry program. Recipients are selected by chemistry faculty and there is no student application process.

Durward C. Layde Memorial Scholarship

The Durward C. Layde Memorial Scholarship is given to a chemistry or biochemistry major with junior or senior standing, academic merit, and demonstrated financial need as shown on the FAFSA. Second degree students are not eligible.

Students who have an up-to-date Panther Scholarship Portal General Application and the College of Letters & Science Scholarships and Awards Application will be considered, typically in spring each year. No additional or separate application is required; students should thoroughly fill out the Panther Scholarship Portal General Application and the College of Letters & Science Scholarships and Awards Application. Awards given in spring are for the following school year so students graduating that same spring or summer are not eligible.

George Keulks Memorial Scholarship & Award

Multiple awards are given for outstanding performance in chemistry research, coursework, and/or student teaching. The Department will notify students when various competitions are open for entry.

Gloria Moczynski Student Teacher Award

The Gloria Moczynski Student Teacher Award is given to an individual who has demonstrated excellence in teaching chemistry, either as a TA or through the Supplemental Instruction program. There is no application. Recipients are selected by the faculty.

Greater Milwaukee Foundation Joseph (Starr) Diny Scholarship

The Greater Milwaukee Foundation Joseph (Starr) Diny fund supports one STEM major in the College of Letters & Science with a $1,000 scholarship. Eligible students will hold sophomore, junior, or senior standing, will be in good academic standing, and will have demonstrated financial need. Second degree students who already hold a bachelor’s degree are not eligible.

James Krogh Scholarship

The James Krogh Scholarship is awarded to select undergraduate or graduate students whose major field of study is a degree program offered within the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry within the UWM College of Letters and Science.

Peter Kovacic Award in Organic Chemistry

Peter Kovacic Awards are given to one or more students who have achieved academic excellence in organic chemistry. Faculty members in chemistry select the recipient(s) and there is no student application needed.

Sosnovsky Award for Excellence in Graduate Research

Awards for excellence in chemistry research are given to one or more graduate students in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry as selected by the faculty. There is no student application process.

Timothy George Vrakas Memorial Scholarship

The Timothy George Vrakas Memorial Scholarship is given to a biochemistry major or intended major with high academic achievement, demonstrated financial need, and junior or senior standing. Eligible students will be working on their first bachelor’s degree; second degree students are not eligible.

Students who have an up-to-date Panther Scholarship Portal General Application and the College of Letters & Science Scholarships and Awards Application will be considered, typically in spring each year between February and March. No additional or separate application is required; students should thoroughly fill out the Panther Scholarship Portal General Application and the College of Letters & Science Scholarships and Awards Application. Awards given in spring are for the following school year so students graduating that same spring or summer are not eligible. E.G. applications reviewed in Spring 2025 are for Fall 2025; students graduating in May or August 2025 are not eligible.
