Phoenix S. Brown is an interdisciplinary artist and musician based in Milwaukee. Originally from Cincinnati, she earned her BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, with a minor in art history. Her work has been highlighted in solo exhibitions at Hawthorn Contemporary, Wright Museum of Art, and Trout Museum of Art, among others.

H.M.S. Pinafore

Full of wit, absurdity and sly social commentary, HMS Pinafore is a hilarious tale of love, honor and duty aboard a Royal Navy ship whimsically named after a woman’s garment. Written by master social satirists W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan—one of musical theatre’s most iconic duos—this classic 19th-century comic opera gets a fresh, imaginative staging by Milwaukee Opera Theatre’s Producing Artistic Director Jill Anna Ponasik. Presented in collaboration with Milwaukee Opera Theatre and the UWM Department of Theatre, this lively production promises sharp humor, infectious music and a delightful twist on tradition.

Gabriel Sosa is a Cuban-American artist, linguist, educator, and curator. He draws from legal proceedings, personal archives, and contemporary visual culture to explore the mutability of language, the imperfection of memory, and the misinterpretation of both. Sosa teaches at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and serves as Deputy Director of Essex Art Center in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Wisconsin-based artist Geo Rutherford is a Wisconsin-based artist is best known for her work that addresses the Great Lakes. Her Tiktok account took off when she started her popular “Spooky Lakes” series in October of 2020. Today, she has over 1.8 million TikTok followers and frequently receives messages from teachers and parents who appreciate her educational content that inspires kids to explore science, history and environmental causes.

Dani and Sheilah Restack have embarked on an artistic relationship that is formally and emotionally adjacent to their domestic lives, a quotidian zone they share with their young daughter Rose. Both artists have established careers on their own. Michelle Grabner is an artist, writer, and curator. She is the Crown Family Professor of Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she has taught since 1996. Her work is in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, Walker Art Center, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, MUDAM - Musée d’Art Moderne Luxembourg, and the Milwaukee Art Museum, among others. Grabner, along with artist Brad Killam, runs the artist-run project spaces The Suburban, Milwaukee (est. 1999) and The Poor Farm, Little Wolf, Wisconsin (est. 2008). Grabner is a recipient of the 2025 Mary L. Nohl Fund Fellowships for Individual Artists.

Experimental Tuesdays: Adebukola Bodunrin

Adebukola Bodunrin is a Nigerian-Canadian film, & video artist who explores language, culture, and media. In her collage animations, she manipulates film using unorthodox manual and digital techniques to produce unexpected cinematic experiences. Bodunrin’s animation work has been featured on the television series Transparent, and in KCET’s “Lost LA” series, for which she also won an LA Area Emmy award for segment direction.

Debra A. Hardy is an Assistant Professor in Art Education at the Peck School of the Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Hardy’s research interests include the histories of Black schools in urban cities, the histories of art education, community arts, museum education, critical race theory, Black feminist theory, and anti-racist teaching practices. She has published in the Journal of Cultural Research in Art Education and Curriculum and Teaching Dialogue, along with chapters in the Palgrave Handbook for Race and the Arts in Education, Revitalizing Histories, and the forthcoming The Political Turn: Promoting Civic Engagement Through Art and Education.
