The Training & Dispute Resolution Specialist works to advance a campus culture in which all people are valued, dialogue across difference is encouraged, and conflicts are navigated in a healthy and constructive fashion. Trainings and resources are available for individuals or units seeking to resolve current disputes or to proactively build their capacity in conflict transformation or civil dialogue.

Conflict Transformation

Conflict transformation is a theory and practice that highlights how conflict can be a potential catalyst for learning and growth. This approach aims to equip people with the preparation, confidence, and skills needed to engage conflict constructively. Not only does this lead to smoother resolutions when episodes of conflict do arise, but it also fosters a more inclusive climate. A conflict transformation mindset can help community members better dialogue across differences, discover mutual interests, and work together for positive change.

Contact us if you are interested in a conflict transformation presentation or workshop tailored to your department, unit, or program. Please reach out with as much advance notice as possible; there may be a wait if demand is high. We can also provide brief videos and digital handouts that overview conflict transformation principles and recommended practices.

Conflict Transformation Workshops

All UWM faculty, staff, and graduate students are invited to participate in our periodically offered Conflict Transformation workshops, a professional development opportunity to build skills and confidence in navigating conflict constructively. This series of three workshops addresses the following topics:

  1. Conflict Styles
  2. Responsive Strategies: Engaging Conflict in the Moment
  3. Proactive Strategies: Preparing for conflict

Workshops are interactive and use scenarios to prompt reflection on concrete conflict situations that might occur in classrooms, offices, or on work teams. Participants have opportunity to learn and practice effective conflict transformation skills that they can use in these and other settings.

Dispute Resolution

The work of the Training & Dispute Resolution Specialist is intended to supplement the more formal complaint and investigative processes overseen by Equal Opportunity & Civil Rights. This work is also intended to complement support services provided by the Dean of Students Office and informal conflict resolution services available through the Ombuds Council.

Ombuds Council

If you are experiencing a current conflict related to your work at UWM, we recommend that you contact the Ombuds Council—a confidential, informal, impartial, and independent resource for staff, faculty, graduate students, and administrators at UWM.

Members of the Ombuds Council provide consultations to help individuals process concerns, consider options, and, if applicable, prepare for challenging conversations. When needed and appropriate, these Ombuds can also serve as third-party facilitators to support informal conflict resolution.
