“Cleaning the Nation: National Purification, Contemporary Hindu Nationalism and the Politics of Gender”

Featuring Dr. Raka Shome, Harron Family Endowed Chair, and Communication Professor at Villanova University

Friday, April 9, 2021 — 3:00-4:30 pm

Dr. Raka ShomeThis lecture will focus on the rhetorical logics of contemporary India nationalism that is being forged under the current right wing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP party. Dr. Shome will address how the (Hindu) female body—and specifically the figure of the mother (Mother India)–often stands in for the clean national body that must be honored and protected from defilement, thus contributing to the violent solidification of Hindu nationalism.
