The Vocal Arts Festival provides an opportunity for talented singers to interact with, perform for, and join their voices with peers from around the region as they learn and grow as both soloists and choral artists. The festival also includes the UWM Vocal Showcase Recital and the Final Concert with UWM Concert Chorale.

The Storyteller | UWM Wind Ensemble

This program by the UW-Milwaukee Wind Ensemble will feature Professors Kevin Hartman (Trumpet) and Bernard Zinck (Violin) as featured performers on James M. Stephenson’s “The Storyteller,” an homage to long-time Chicago Symphony Orchestra Principal Trumpet Adolph “Bud” Herseth (1921-2013). The concert will also include a pair of compositions with celestial inspirations: Roshanne Etezady’s “Parhelion” and Frank Ticheli’s “Symphony No. 2: Apollo Unleashed.” We are pleased to welcome special nominated high school students in Milwaukee who will perform side-by-side at this concert.

UWM Symphony Concerto Competition Winners’ Concert & Brahms Serenade No.1

The UWM Symphony Orchestra’s first concert of 2025 will feature clarinetist Mauricio Franco, winner of the 2024-25 Concerto Competition, performing Mercer Bitsch’s Concertino for Bassoon, transcribed for bass clarinet. This lively work is filled with playful rhythms and bold contrasts. The program also includes Brahms' Serenade No. 1 in D Major, a lyrical composition that displays the composer’s orchestral mastery. Originally written for an octet, expanded to a chamber nonet, and later revised for small orchestra, the final version is most often performed today with a full orchestra.

UWAY Concert

The resident members of the UWM Youth Wind and Percussion Ensembles program (UWAY) welcome aspiring members as part of the UWAY “All-Star” Band and share a special concert performance! The area’s finest middle school and high school age woodwind, brass, and percussion students make-up these ensembles and each student is invited to be a part of this exclusive event at UW-Milwaukee.

Wind Band Conducting Symposium

The Wind Band Conducting Symposium will focus on enhancing conducting, score study, and wind band teaching. Conducting participants will conduct the UWM Wind Ensemble or Symphony Band while receiving feedback from the conducting faculty. Session topics also include conducting pedagogy, rehearsal techniques, and musicianship. Attendees may participate as either a Conducting Participant or an Observing Auditor. Conducting participants will also have the opportunity to conduct one of the large wind bands in concert at the end of the symposium.

Wind Band Conducting Symposium Concert

The UWM Wind Band Conducting Symposium Concert is a culmination of conducting, score study, and wind band teaching. Participants will conduct the Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band after two days of study under Dr. Thomas Gamboa, Director of Bands at UW-Milwaukee; Dr. Scott Corley, Associate Director of Bands at UW-Milwaukee; and guest clinician Michael Haithcock.

MKE Percussion Festival

The MKE Percussion Festival brings together percussionists of all ages for a weekend of educational and performance opportunities. Attendees will be able to learn from guest artists about a variety of topics, instruments, techniques, and musical styles related to percussion in addition to listening to, and participating in, performances and workshops. All events are designed to be accessible and inclusive to empower and inspire all participants on their percussive journey.  

MKE Mass Steel Band

Steel pan ensembles and individual performers from around Wisconsin and Illinois will come together to form the 2025 MKE Mass Steel Band, hosted by the UWM Steel PANthers Steel Band. Involving over fifty performers, the event will fill the stage with steel pans and feature a lively combination of traditional music and pop transcriptions.

Celebrating Tenor-Bass Choirs – A Joint Choral Concert
