The UWM Symphony Orchestra and Choirs join forces for an evening of powerful choral-orchestral masterworks. In recognition of the 250th anniversary of the United States, the program features American works that reflect on the nation’s history and ideals, including Florence Price’s Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight and Aaron Copland’s iconic Fanfare for the Common Man. The program also features Mozart’s radiant Coronation Mass, bringing together orchestra, chorus, and soloists in one of his most celebrated sacred works.
Featured soloists include Colleen Brooks, Kristin Knutzen, Zack Durlam, and Aaron Agulay. The performance will be conducted by Jun Kim.
UWM’s Symphony Orchestra is comprised of graduate and undergraduate music majors, as well as other students. The ensemble presents seven to eight concerts each year and regularly collaborates with UWM Choirs and Opera Theatre.
The orchestra has performed at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, the Chicago Symphony Center, and the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts. It was selected as one of two orchestras to perform at the College Orchestra Directors Association National Conference in Los Angeles and has appeared at the Wisconsin Music Educators Association State Conference. It also features student soloists selected through the annual UWM Symphony Concerto Competition.
The choral program at UWM offers five choirs – Concert Chorale (auditioned mixed choir), Bella Voce (auditioned soprano-alto choir), Kameraden (tenor-bass choir), Alta Voce (soprano-alto choir), and Kameraden Plus (auditioned tenor-bass choir whose members also sing in Kameraden). In addition to their individual performances which typically feature sacred and secular music from a wide variety of styles and time periods, the choirs also combine annually to present a major choral/orchestral work with the UWM Symphony Orchestra.
