Lecturer prepares to open secondhand art supply shop

A desk with stacks of art supplies is below three colorful banners reading "art is magic".

Film lecturer Emily Downes is preparing to open Magic Hands Creative Reuse, a community-driven secondhand supply shop that gives new life to old art supplies.

In a Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service reader submission, Downes describes her background as an educator inspired her to create the shop.

“As an educator and workshop leader, I’ve seen firsthand what happens when art materials become more accessible,” Downes said. “People surprise themselves with what they can create when cost and access aren’t barriers. Taking something someone else might consider ‘trash’ and turning it into a treasure — that’s the magic I’ve always wanted Magic Hands to bring to the community.”
